Chairman Clas Svahn devotes this issue’s
editorial to talking about what's likely to be the most famous ufo case in
Swedish history; the close encounter of Gösta Carlsson in
1946. Svahn is, without any doubt, the leading authority on the case, having met
with Carlsson on several occasions and written a full-length book about it.
(Unfortunately only available in Swedish). Carlsson is now deceased, and many
questions are still lacking answers. What most people keep inquiring him about,
Svahn says, are the two strange artifacts Carlsson claims he found at the site,
a rod and a ring. Possibly extraterrestrial, Carlsson claimed he sent them to a
foreign lab for analysis, but the results never came back and the present
location of the two artifacts is not known.
Pages 4-5: Another strange light
in northern Sweden
Article by Svahn, accompanied by photographs taken by Dick Lannerblad
and Per Lundmark. On the evening of October 1, 2004, three
hunters in northern Sweden, driving home, suddenly observed a strong light in
the sky. One of them managed to snap two pictures, one of which is included in
the article. The article gives a thorough description of the events before and
after the incident, and some technical data. All three observers agree on what
happened. Other sightings resembling this one have occurred in the area before.
The main observer has this to say about what happened: "Unless we’ d taken
those pictures, nobody would’ ve cared".
Pages 6-7: Two low-flying objects
over Lidingö (Stockholm)
Article by Andreas Ohlsson, accompanied by a photograph taken by
him. In the article, Ohlsson reports a sighting a woman had on September 9,
2004, in Lidingö, close to Stockholm. Ohlsson met with the woman on the
location. Enthusiastically she told him of what she had seen: two rather small
objects that she managed to observe for quite some time. Ohlsson did a thorough
investigation of the case, yet it remains unsolved, even if he suspects the
objects might have been some sort of very light-weight object.
Page 7: The walking telephone
pole
Short, and somewhat odd, article by Svahn about a woman who, in 2002, was out in
the forest picking berries. She saw something close to a clear-felled area which
she said resembled a large black telephone pole that moved in a strange manner.
She only saw the object once; on subsequent visits there was nothing to be seen.
Svahn says it’s quite far-fetched to believe the object was actually a living
entity.
Pages 8-10: The green miniature
plane
Article by Svahn, accompanied by photographs by him, a drawing by one of the
witnesses, and a computer-constructed image by Johan Andersson . In
the early summer of 1980, outside the small town of Hedemora in central Sweden,
two women, 49 and 21 years old, got into their car to drive thirteen kilometers
to Hedemora for to do some shopping. After a few hundred meters, one of the
women suddenly spotted something in the corner of her eye. When she looked out
through the side window she saw an object about thirty meters to the right of
the car.
The object was oval-shaped like a
flattened egg, a body with two small wings with cut-off ends pointing out from
the middle. In the front it had something resembling the exterior of a small
helicopter cockpit, and in the back a small fin was pointing upwards. All with a
dark greenish, military color. When the strange object had passed the car and
become visible through the windshield something strange happened. "I could
see how the object flew straight towards a two-story house, where it came to a
halt in front of a window on the second floor," one of the witnesses
says. Her friend, too, remembers clearly how the object suddenly came to a halt
and remained stationary in the air for a while: "At first it seemed as if the
object was to crash into the house, but before impact it came to a halt for a
short while in front of a window". For a few seconds they both
witnessed how the green object remained hovering in front of the house, a mere
15-20 meters from where they were, before it suddenly rose straight up. The
mystery remains unsolved.
Page 11: Why did the robot follow
the road?
On 16 November, 2004, two individuals are traveling south on European highway 4,
when the male driver suddenly sees a spool-shaped object emerging close to the
car on a low altitude. The driver and his female companion were able to view the
object for about one minute, before it disappeared over the roof of the car.
Using calculations by Karsten Jöred , the official UFO investigator
of FOI - the Swedish Military Research Institute - it's
rather unlikely that the couple saw the SAAB Gripen airplane that had passed
over the car at that very moment (since the plane was at an altitude of 4000
meters). Thus the case remains a genuine UFO. The article, by Svahn, is
accompanied by a drawing by one of the witnesses.
Pages 12-13: Book reviews
Five books reviewed this time, all by Stefan Isaksson , four of
them non-fiction and one fiction. The latter is a work by Dean Koontz.
Isaksson isn't very pleased with it at all. Of the four non-fiction books, three
are from Prometheus Books, and are thus more or less skeptical. Of the three,
Isaksson is especially pleased with John F. Moffitt's book
Picturing Extraterrestrials
- Alien Images in Modern Mass Culture . The last of the five books,
Rodney Perkins and Forrest Jackson’s book
Cosmic Suicide: The Tragedy and Transcendence of Heaven’s Gate
is another great book, although it's unfortunate that it's as thin as it is.
Pages 14-15: Advertisements
Various advertisements of books sold by UFO-Sweden, and an update of
UFO-Sweden’s website www.ufo.se
Pages 16-17: Great balls of fire
Article by Jenny Ståhl, accompanied by photographs by Jörgen Granli.
The story is about a group of people, witnessing what resembled great balls of
fire in Enköping, Sweden. What adds extra flavor to the story is that one
of the witnesses has actually witnessed the same phenomenon once before. As is
the case with most sightings investigated by UFO-Sweden, details are thorough
and accurate, but the mystery still remains a mystery. The investigation
continues.
Pages 18-21: Horrific fauna
UFO-Sweden’s expert on fortean phenomena, Richard Svensson , writes (and
as always, draws beautiful pictures) about bizarre things, not necessarily UFO
related. This time it's all about the sea serpent, that elusive monster of the
deep which has for centuries haunted sailors all over the world. Sightings are
plentiful, but hard evidence is not (as the case often is). Cryptozoology is an
interesting subject, definitely worthy of serious study, and Svensson is once
again successful in creating a written piece of work that will interest anyone
with a passion for the unexplained.
Pages 22-23: Media watch
C Göran Norlén gives a review of news clippings from Swedish media, this time
from the beginning of September 2004 up until the middle of October 2004.
As always, there has been both very good and very bad things said in Swedish
media about the UFO phenomenon. Norlén isn't very pleased with a lot of things,
and he makes sure the reader becomes aware of that. He has spent 35 years in the
UFO business, and now he feels somewhat confused with the whole thing.
Pages 24-25: Various short
articles
Five short articles, most of them by Svahn, about, among other things, an odd
photograph, a contest for the readers, and an old picture of what some believe
is an extraterrestrial from the 1930s.
Pages 26-27: International Ufology
Stefan Roslund has ten short news items about the
international UFO, and forteana, scene. Among other things, Roslund mentions the
Tunguska incident, a Swedish book translated into English, a presentation of two
new UFO magazines, The Aztec Crash, and so on.
Pages 28-29: News from the Report
Centre
Strange things are indeed taking place in the skies. The Report Central run by
UFO Sweden receives several hundred reports annually, and in this issue of UFO
Aktuellt Jenny Ståhl presents three of them, taking place in 1984, 2004,
and 2004. The article is also accompanied by a photographs where the reader gets
a chance to see who attended the latest field investigator course held by UFO
Sweden
Pages 30-31: Sweden and Britain
Article by Svahn, about when he, Anders Persson and Mikael
Sjöberg visited the Mary Evans Picture Library, last fall. They
also met with ufologists John Rimmer, Paul Sieveking, and Bob
Rickard. The trip resulted in tons (well, not exactly, but still
lots) of new material for the Swedish Archives for UFO Research.

Short article by Svahn about how easy it is, nowadays, to fake an alleged UFO
photograph.
