From Marc Hallet, Liége, Belgium, April 2007
Belgian UFO researcher & writer Marc Hallet has been a faithful contributor of copies of his materials since the early years of AFU. I counted no less than twenty of his books and booklet titles (plus another two under the nom-de-plus Carl Mathel) in our library database. Hallet is probably most well known for his works on George Adamski   and the Belgian UFO wave   of the early 1990s.

We received this disc Les Arcanes de l'Ufologie  (The secrets of ufology) some months ago.

This is a skeptical historical-sociological overview of ufology's history with particular focus on the subject's connections with science fiction. The 186 page book, which ends with a personal interview with the author, is stored on a CD disc as a number of PDF documents. We have printed the book and we will, of course, preserve it in a binder, along with the CD.
From Jean-Luc Rivera, France, July 2007
Under the series name Bibliotéque Heuvelmansienne the Paris publisher Les Editions de l'Oeil du Sphinx has started a series of reprints of the complete life works of the famous cryptozoologist Bernard Heuvelsmans (1916-2001). The first two volumes came off the presses in June 2007. AFU has gratefully received copies for our reference library.

We do not know if Heuvelmans ever published any data or theories on UFOs but since AFU has, previously,  a sizeable collection on forteana and cryptozoology, it is very appropriate for us to have these books on our shelves!

The first volume in the series is Jean-Jacques Barloy's biography of Heuvelmans, lavishly illustrated with b/w and colour photos from the life of the founder of cryptozoology.

The second is a volume by Heuvelmans on mystery cats reported from the African continent. This is all in French, but hopefully someone will eventually translate this to English!?

From Didier Gomez, France, July 2007
AFU attempts to get a copy of each regional UFO study available. In the past few years we have acquired dozens of them!!

Our French correspondent Didier Gomez has written just such a study (published in 2006) of all the known UFO cases from the department of Tarn   in the south-central part of France. Prominent among the 103 cases, (between 1952 and 2006) is the Gaillac   cigar & angel hair case of October 27, 1952.

Gomez' book includes a map and listing of all the cases, plus a section of sample hypotheses for the UFO phenomenon with quotes from well known projects and investigators.

From Kiyoshi Amamiya, Tenri, Japan, Febr. 2007
On October 23, 2004, Japanese ufologist Kiyoshi Amamiya (publisher of The UFO Researcher   since 1989) caught a strange phenomenon on digital video while filming (from ground) an overflight of a commercial jet near an airport in Osaka.

This is the analysis of this incident written by Richard F. Haines and William Puckett of the NARCAP organization (National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena), published by Amamiya himself as a companion to vol. 17 no. 1 of The UFO Researcher

The report concludes that the light close to the aircraft remains unidentified and was probably closer to the camera than the aircraft was.

From Jean-Luc Rivera, Paris, France, February 2006
This is the 4th edition of La Gazette Fortéenne , which has but one tiny fault - it is published only   in French. Well, to comfort us, there are short English summaries of 23 contributed articles at the end of this edition...

The 2005 edition has two main themes: the 1954 wave of UFO cases in Europe, and the discovery of a  diminutive pre-historic human race on the island of Flores in S.E. Asia. Plus 20 pages of book reviews and a lot of other interesting contributions. Of Scandinavian interest is Ted Bloecher 's comparison of the Norwegian 1954 Oeydalen case with a similar case the very same year, on the mid-Atlantic Azores island.

And what about the 1913 airship wave in Russia - written about by Mikhail Gershtein  - one but wonders: are there contemporary cases hidden in stacks of old Swedish-Scandinavian newspaper print??
From Paper Wings Publishing, Maricopa, Arizona, February 2006.
We have gratefully received a copy of this 654 page study of the possible relationships between occult and spiritual mysteries and extraterrestrial intelligence and UFOs. "Thank you for your generous contribution to this important field. Enclosed is a complimentary autographed copy of Spiritual practice, occultism, and extraterrestrial intelligence: A travel guide for beyond the rainbow by Judy Kennedy for inclusion in your archives."

Although concentrating on "the New Age", two chapters, "The cosmic connection: UFOs, ETs, and our origins" and "UFOs, ETs, and the mystery schools" (about 170 pages), may be very relevant to UFO studies. Thank you very much!

From UFOMania Editions, Lombers, France, January 2006
Un fait maudit    ("A damned fact") is the title of this well-produced French Histoire originale et phénoménolo-gique du fait OVNI.   It is a 200 page A4 size softcover history by Thibaut Canuti, a 32 years old Frenchman, about the early UFO waves, including a small chapter on the Swedish ghost rockets.

This historical exposé comes into controversial subjects such as the MJ12 documents and the Santilli autopsy film. A nice compilation on - primarely - the pre-1946 history of UFOs. 433 source references, a bibliography and an appendix with American documents reproduced. Printed in just 100 copies, so if you want it go and get it now! For more on this book see this.

From Editions Aldane, Cointrin, Switzerland, October 2005
Alain Stauffer & Daniel Benaroya   from Cointrin, Switzerland, have started a book company to publish UFO books for French-reading people in Switzerland (and of course for audiences from other French-speaking areas in central Europe).

Stauffer and Benaroya have kindly  donated archival copies of their previous books by Shi Bo   (UFOs in China) and Jean Pollion   ("Ummo" case material, as book and as a CD).

Now, here comes the French edition of Luc Bürgin's UFOs über der Schweiz, previously in German, then published by Kopp Verlag. OVNI sur la Suisse   has reports from the Swiss Air Force, from Swissair and a report catalogue of Swiss UFO reports 1929-1997.

Aldane has two other titles in preparation in French: von Ludwiger  's book on European cases and another book by Reginaldo de Athayde  on UFOs in the north-eastern part of Brazil.
From Wahlström & Widstrand and Leopard förlag, December 2004 & March 2005
Two recent Swedish  books by skeptics, På  spaning efter helheten. New Age - en ny folktro?   and Vetenskap och villfarelse ,  both kindly donated for preservation to the AFU archives by their publishers,
Wahlström & Widstrand and Leopard Förlag, respectively.   The first, on the New Age movement(s) (including UFOs and UFO cults) by Olav Hammer , an historian of religion at the University of Odense, Denmark.   The second, a debunking compilation edited by Jesper Jerkert    and  Sven Ove Hansson,  forefront people in the "Swedish  CSICOP",  VoF, Vetenskap och Folkbildnng, publishers of the magazine Folkvett  , a title that could (literally) be translated as: 'People ought to know better'  ... Well, those people are not shy!!
From Hilary Evans, November 2004.
The latest from the pen of sociologist Robert Bartholomew, assisted by British author Hilary Evans. Once again, a collection of mass delusions (?), spanning from the Great Moon hoax in 1833 to the President Johnson cult (I didn't know there was one)...

Also includes chapters on Halley's comet, Orson Welles War of the Worlds,  Europe's Mad Cow disease and Terrorism scares. No direct references in the index to UFOs, or flying saucers, yet to be preserved here because of being related to the UFO mythologies.

From SUFOI, the Danish UFO organization, February 2005
The Scandinavian UFO Information of Copenhagen published the first edition of this booklet (28 pages) in 2000.

Now (2005) comes the 2nd edition, printed in no less than 12.000 copies, and available to the public as a promotion for serious UFO research. The booklet was printed with economical support from the Danish Ministry of Education's "Fund for tipping and lotto money". The booklet is a colorful guide to many of the most common natural or artificial phenomena in the skies.

From Forrest Jackson, July 2004
We recently acquired a copy of Cosmic suicide. The tragedy and transcedence of Heaven's Gate , by Rodney Perkins and Forrest Jackson from one of the authors (Jackson). This is a short, yet non-sensational, study of the Marshall Applewhite UFO cult, deserving more attention than what it has gotten since publication in 1997. Please check up the author's/publisher's homepage for more details on how to get this book. Recommended!
From Ole Jonny Braenne, Oslo, July 2004
The Norwegian Humanists (Human-Ethical Society) runs Humanist Forlag, which brings out books with critical perspectives on 'pseudo-sciences' and religion. This spring they published 'Romvesener: Fredselskere, kidnappere og forførere'  (Space beings: peace lovers, kidnappers and seducers), a 326 page hardcover by George M. Rønnevig, a specialist in the history of religion.

In 2003 Humanist Forlag published 'Konspiranoia. Konspirationsteorier fra 66 till WTC'  (Conspiramania. Conspiracy theories from 666 to WTC), edited by Arnfinn Pettersen and Terje Emberland. One of the 13 chapters is 'Conspirators from outer space. Conspiracy theories from the  Norwegian UFO milieu'   by Jan Bertil Heilund
AFU acquisitions recently, mainly through eBay auctions.
Religious books, where the UFO phenomenon is largely interpreted and described as 'demonic'  by nature, form a distinct sub-genre of the UFO literature -- Ufocode 'TRD'. This little analyzed genre, now represented by at least 27 titles in the AFU book inventory, has been one of the goals of our recent acquisition program for our library. The books in the picture are some of the recent examples - they should mainly be of interest to a student of the sociology of religion.
From Giuseppe Stilo, Italy, June 20, 2004
The Italian national group CISU has for many years been active with something they call Operazione Origini, a project to catalog all Italian phenomena during the inception of the UFO era, primarely 1946-1954. Giuseppe Stilo has been the primus motor of the project, which has involved dozens of researchers, and resulted in 1.709 sightings found in the Italian press.
55 of these were from 1946. This new book, The dawn of a new era,  just off the presses,  concentrates on the Italian and international UFO scene for 1946, with a lot of English and Scandinavian materials translated into Italian. Two previous books by Stilo - in the same series - focused on 1950 and 1952. The Italians have managed to complete something we Scandinavians are but dreaming of, despite the fact that 95 % of the 1946 sighting material came out of Scandinavia. Or, to make excuses, the richness of this material may be the reason we here Up North haven't (yet) succeeded to present a serious work on the ghost rocket phenomenon.
From Björn Borg, Finland, May 2004.
Finnish author Björn Borg has had his third UFO book published by the Finnish society UFO-Finland in 2004.  Björn has kindly donated a copy for the AFU archives, via Clas Svahn.

The book centers on astronomer's sightings and opinions, world-wide. It is a meticulously referenced chronological list of every incident where an astronomer has been involved.

The book includes a name index to astronomers involved and with a surprising number of 545 references it may be a valuable research tool, even if you are not fluent in Finnish...
From Joseph Glapa, France, May 2004
Joseph Glapa sent us a link to his English version of a recent essay. Continues a long French tradition of theorizing about the propulsion aspect of UFOs, as represented by  Plantier, Petit and PoherDownload it and see for yourself!
From Parthenon and Carl-Anton Mattsson, March 18, 2004
On the right is a well-known mass-market book, first copyrighted and published in 1992, written by a certain Robert Jackson. Carl-Anton Mattsson kindly donated a copy of the recent 2003 edition    which still carries such non-cases as the Swedish Domsten "abduction attempt", vindicated in 1989 (AFU Newsletter #33), and the Spitzbergen saucer crash (effectively crashed in AFU Newsletter #36). Oh, what a folklore we have!

From Claude Poher, France, March 10, 2004
Dr. Claude Poher has kindly sent AFU - with  dedication - a copy of his recently published French book along with this presentation:

"My book presents the results of my 20 years personal work, following my long involvement in Space research, Astrophysics and UFO research. The book concerns Interstellar travel, and a quantum theory of gravitation, including the many experimental facts proving that my theory could be exact. This would explain how interstellar travel is scientifically possible.

The book compares also ufo reports with the results presented in the two fields (interstellar travel and gravitation), and proposes a research direction for interstellar propulsion. There is also one annex about epistemology, concerning GEPAN."

You can order the book from Amazon France by following this link (as I write this, there are only 5 copies left!)...

From Scandinavian UFO Information (SUFOI), Denmark, March 10, 2004
SUFOI, the major Danish UFO organization published seven previous yearbooks (1=1987, 2=1988, 3=1989, 4=1990-91, 5=1997, 6=1998, 7=1999).  Issue #8 (2004) is a welcome return of this series, always with Kim Møller Hansen, SUFOI:s present chairman, as the editor. This yearbook marks a continued shift towards UFO skepticism. All articles and book reviews in this issue comes from skeptics or are translations from the Skeptical Inquirer.
From Atlantis (book publishers), Stockholm, February 17, 2004
Esko Valtaoja is a Finnish astronomer who has written "Hemma i världsrymden"   (Home in space) published by Atlantis in 2003. The book is a well-written and well-received - by the critics - review of the science of astrobiology.    Chapter 10 is an amusing review of UFO cultists, the Finnish in particular, such as Rauni-Leena Luukanen-Kilde and Juhan af Grann.

Recommended reading for our Swedish and Finnish visitors.  Thanks to the publishers for donating a copy to our library!

From Carlsson Bokförlag, Stockholm, January 28, 2004.
Michael Godhe has written, and defended, a Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Linköping, Sweden. Titled "Tomorrow's specialists", it analysis the influence of technology, space and science fiction on society and the youth culture during the 1950s (or, more correctly, the period 1946-1964).

The dissertation touches on the 1950s UFO contactee cults, represented in Sweden by the books published from the Parthenon book company. Many thanks to the publishers for kindly donating a copy to AFU!

From Alarm Clock Publishing, Ceredo, West Virginia & author Chris B. Evans, October 28, 2003.
Author Chris B. Evans, and his publishers, have kindly donated an autographed copy of the just-published book "Alien conspiracy. Unraveling the UFO/alien mystery" (Alarm Clock, 2003) to the AFU reference library.

 Thank you so much!
